AXP Visits Hydraulx Studios!
« on: February 03, 2008, 08:07:01 PM »

From the main AXP page:

Quote
Site staffer, and our main man in Los Angeles, Jay West, has just finished posting up his account of a visit he made to Santa Monica, California based Hydraulx studios, owned and operated by AVP-R directors Greg and Colin Strause, a couple of weeks back. This "modern day 'Willy Wonka' factory" provided a technological tour de force as Jay visited all of the key areas of the visual effects house - including edit bays, screening rooms and a life-sized statue of an Alien (see below):

The article also features a candid interview with Colin, who goes into detail describing what it was like making the film, the obstacles he and Greg faced during the production, box office predictions, fan reaction to the film, the forth-coming DVD, and much of the unseen footage.

It's a very interesting and engaging read. You can read the article and checkout more than 15 images in our interviews section.

which created a very atmospheric, almost "Nostoromo" interior-like effect -- ah ha! -- switched movie references on you there...! If you do not know where that reference comes from -- I weep for your future...

I weep for my future too not knowing what a "Nostoromo" is!! Shocked

Well, they recognize that the movie moves along way to quickly. However, I am very skeptical that "6 or 8 additional minutes" is really going to fix those pacing issues.

Nostoromo... Grin

And what was with all that self indulgent Logan's Run wank at the start?  Huh

Otherwise, an interesting read.  He tries to walk a diplomatic tightrope between saying "It's a business and we have to make do with what Fox gave us" and "It's all Fox's fault the film wasn't that great".

(And the the Cameron masturbating appreciation was a tad over the top).

I'm torn of what to think of the guy, but that was admittedly a very interesting read. Thanks for sharing, Hicks!

Nice and all, but dear God that was horribly written. The elipses and hyphens literally hurt my eyes and I had difficulty concentrating on the words because of it Undecided

That was good and bad, it gave it a loose conversational feel, but yeah, it did make it difficult to read after a while.

Same with the 20-odd "it's like"s throughout.

When I'm reading interviews, I like 'em tidied up, because I'm not there for the conversation, I'm there for the information. And if the information is written in a way that makes my eyes bleed, I'm not going to be able to keep it long.

Just because they had difficulties or "we can't possibly understand movie-making" does not excuse them. Other directors have all faced similar challenges and produced much better films. They are nice guys, but they failed with this movie.

EDIT: Was in response to the post below me...which suddenly moved on me. Smiley

Wow, that was long! Very interesting stuff in there. Low budget, many challenges, and this being they're first film, The Strause Brothers did a great job. All the odds against them, they still pulled through the harsh reality of what real filming making is all about. Colin made very good points, I just hope some of the fans have more of a clear understanding of the harsh challenges that real film makers have to go through each day.

I hope most of the points that were made in the interview penetrates in some of the fans artificially constructed reality of what their own version of film making is all about.

The future for AVP3 should be interesting, it looks like the brothers have a bright future.

I tend to agree.  It started out okay enough, but about half way through, the constant elipses started to shit me and I only skimmed over the rest.

Hey Sil & SM (Hello to my blokes down under...!) , the correct spelling of "elipses" is... "ellipses" - thanks for the grammar lesson... LOL...!

It wasn't a grammar lesson, it was a "Please stop making my eyes cry blood mister" lesson Wink

It's a great review, but I just think it would've been better if you'd put a widdle more time into transcribing it, is all.

Hi SM: Actually, you were correct in your above comment and observation when you said: "it gave it a loose conversational feel." Aesthetically, for all intents and purposes, the ellipses were not any sort of "short cut," rather, they were included to aesthetically reflect the actual dialogue of the interview; rather than it being "manicured" and "sanitized" -- or edited thereof.

OK -- "School's out!" LOL!

How are things "down under"?
