That was my thought. I don't know how something like that would be even possible. It'd be difficult enough these days, let alone centuries from now when technology was improved and people we're spread out over half the galaxy. That might aid it, though. What we saw of Network communications in Alien 3 implies that they're brief and to the point. You've got loads of colonies spread out, communication between them is sparse and the bulk of which comes from people being shipped out to them. Each colony might build up their own view of recent history, muddled and babel-effected by their isolation. When the colonies are eventually unified (which I presume is what the United Systems set out to do) a singular history is dictated, and all the rest becomes 'banned'. Although I like to think, in my fanwanky sort of way, that the backstory for Ward's Wooden Planet and the Book of Morse can be joined together. Morse writes of his experiences which leads to an anti-technological cult which worships Ripley. The big computer virus comes along, wipes most of the records etc, leading to a time of uncertainty during which the cult grows. Eventually the Corporations get technological society back on its feet, Morse's cult an teachings are banned, and the practitioners are sent to the Wooden Planet to serve out their death sentence! What was his Prisoner ID number?

That would work to a point. But not covering up the fact that the cradle of humanity was over-run by Aliens, but no one remembers it? To the point where they have to clone Ripley just to get an Alien?

That wouldn't work at all, no!
I think Perez's line that Ellen Ripley died trying to wipe this species out ...for all intents and purposes, she succeeded pretty much makes it clear that Alien 3 was the last contact between human and Alien.
Just out of interest, with the EU stuff, how did the bases on the Moon, Mars and Titan take Earth being overrun? Were they also infested?

Never mentioned. I doubt the EU writers knew about the bases on Luna, Mars and Titan.
There is almost a throwaway line in AvP:War where one of the characters mentions the Aliens being "all over the colonies".
