I totally agree that Weyland was awful, especially since it looked about as convincing as a Star Trek TNG episode where someone's in cheap old person makeup for some timeline jumping reason.

Of course I don't actually like Guy Pearce as Weyland at all. I found him INCREDIBLY hammy and scene-chewing in the TED video as well as the new psych-up pre-TED viral video that's now doing the rounds. He was actually better as old man Weyland, but was still shite because he looks rubbish.

I was really happy to embrace a new Weyland who hopefully erases AVP's Weyland backstory (and at least doesn't do the whole ancestors-played-by-the-same-actor cheesy crap), but Henriksen played his role far more naturally than Pearce, so I'm not exactly embracing the new one, young or old, even though Prometheus was far more enjoyable than either AVP to me.

I don't mind. Visiting my mother in hospital in the past (she's alright now), I've seen some old people that have really looked that shitty.

But did you ever look at them and think "is that old man opposite actually only 35 and in unconvincing wrinkly makeup?"

Did anyone else have to sit through a seemingly endless countdown, cycling through the security cameras of the ship, before the start of the movie?

Wait what?

I liked the young Weyland in the pre-release videos, especially in contrast with Charles Bishop Weyland (not that I dislike Lance Henriksen, or CB Weyland, I think the character, whatever one might have to say about the movie, was brilliant). But maybe also because of that the old Weyland seemed rather horrible to me. I think the TED video, for instance, was brilliant, but I completely concur with the "unconvincing wrinkly makeup" comment.

I had no problem with the acting, but the makeup was unconvincing - and missing on the hands.  Seeing a silly-putty face and perfectly normal hands kind of killed my suspension of disbelief.

People have been complaining about some of the illogical actions of the characters....particularly the biologist who is frightened by the dead Engineers but happily tries to pet the serpent like alien. I've been thinking that this could be another form of subtle commentary...he is frightened by the face of his god (albeit a dead god), but gladly goes to embrace the serpent...allegory to Man's flawed nature once again and a biblical reference of some kind? Or not...

Either way, the movie has got me thinking about it days after I've seen it...so I have to say that is a really good thing.

I agree it has me thinking a lot as well.  The Alien universe is IMO the most interesting one in any form of media.  As much as I'm unsure how much I enjoy Prometheus I keep thinking about the questions and clues it gives us.

Exactly my thoughts! I mean, I have only seen it once, and despite not thinking "wow, the best movie I have ever seen!" upon leaving the cinema, one has to wonder what does it say that I can spend hours discussing it with such an enjoyment...

For some reason, Guy Pearce in the old makeup reminded me of James Woods.

This. This is a work of genius. 'Prometheus: An Archaeological Perspective (sort of)' by Henry Rothwell. It contains such gems as:

At the breakfast table a rather nice biologist (played by Raef Spall, son of Timothy) introduces himself to a grumpy geologist, who is very rude. Later on, he confirms he’s the geologist, by shouting “I’m a geologist, I fucking love rocks!” as if that was the most pressing point that needed explaining. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The current point that needs explaining is the implication that these two crew members have managed to make it this far without actually meeting each other, and are plainly incompatible. It seems that at least one part of the crew selection procedure took the form of a raffle at an arsehole convention.

EDIT:

And this:

///IMAGINED EARLY SCRIPT MEETING\\\

Damon Lindelof “So we’ll have this crashed ship, and a load of people who don’t know each other, and there’ll be loads of unexplained things happening, and life-forms charging about the place, and it’ll be hyper-confusing. Like Lost, but in space.”

Ridley “Lost. But in space. Hmmm. Lost. But in space. I like it. What shall we call it?”

Damon Lindelof “Prometheus.”

Ridley “Brilliant! But why? No, just brilliant! As long as it has lots of snappy informative dialogue.”

Damon Lindelof ”I don’t really do that. I tend to just go with a baffling sequence of potentially interconnected events that looks as though it might be going somewhere, but isn’t. That way everybody on the internet can argue about it for ages. That’s the bit I like. People on the internet arguing about stuff for ages. I also love it when they say things like ‘don’t condemn it so quickly – this is maybe the first part of something bigger’. It makes me think ‘oh yeah. that could be it. Maybe I’ll write another one’ and then people will argue about that on the internet too. For ages. Because I like that.”

Ridley ”People argue on the internet?”

Damon Lindelof “They do. But there’s one thing I don’t think they’ve argued about on the internet yet?”

Ridley “What?”

Damon Lindelof “Intelligent Design vs Evolution. I don’t think that’s come up at all.”

Ridley “Brilliant! Cut! Haha no! I mean. . . Action?”
///

Oh, and this:

So they land the SBS on the planet. Moon. Whatever. After hitting the cloud layer the captain asks what the atmosphere is like. Fortunately for everyone on board, the reply isn’t “astoundingly fucking corrosive.” They could have performed a spectrographic analysis from a safe distance, but whatever. I’m surprised he asked at all. He was probably in a hurry to see if it was snowing, what with it being Christmas and everything.

This really is the funniest thing I've read on Prometheus!
