Count the Alien Series References
« on: June 18, 2012, 02:59:20 PM »

Aside from the obvious (like LV-223 being a moon of a ringed gas giant, David 8 getting decapitated, Shaw's "final transmission", etc.), I'm talking small nods that don't really have any bearing on the plot. I spotted:

1. David 8 playing basketball/effortlessly scoring a 3-pointer (as Ripley 8 does in A:R).
2. On that note, David 8/Ripley 8.
3. Ford's line "Roll 92 degrees..." (or something similar to Kane's line in Alien).
4. Helmet-cam footage.
5. Rain inside the temple, and the crew looking up at bright light above (Brett in the landing gear room in Alien).
6. Flamethrowers.
7. Mutant Fifield getting run over by a vehicle, closeup of his head being crushed (much like an Alien's in Aliens).
8. Possibly Shaw's line "WE ARE LEAVING!!" (delivered the same way by Hicks to Drake/Vasquez in Aliens).

I'm sure there are many more but they currently escape me.

Did anyone see any chains hanging anywhere? I'd be kind of surprised if they never made an appearance.

There were many, many, many, only of course I won't remember them from the top of my head now.

But apart from those you said, what I recall... (Or what made the memory of something cross my mind when I saw it anyway, if that counts - I think it should.)

9. The slight reference to the Dallas crawling through airvents-others mapping him with Fifield and the other guy being left in the cavern and Janek freaking them out with the ping (I expected originally that there will be a scene at some point with Janek navigating the two of them out, yelling: "No! The other way!")
10. I wonder if the Holloway's "Kill me" to Vickers wasn't a bit like Ripley's to Dillon
11. Speaking of Ripley, of course the obligatory "Last survivor of Prometheus..." speech
12. Possibly, the Prometheus flying through the clouds to the surface - a bit like the dropship?
13. Didn't some of the guys say at the start something about the food, aka the stuff Parker and Kane talk about just before the chestbursting scene?

I seem to recall only really weird stuff. But I am sure there were more obvious things. But hey, I have seen it only once, and already quite some time ago...

Vickers doing a Ripley and refusing to let an infected crew member in.

By extension, Vickers Is Ripley: she's the one who is too cautious to believe that the invitation is a welcome; she holds David 8 against the wall while questioning him about Secret Company Orders; a last minute dash to the escape pod before the ship explodes.

Yes, yes, exactly, that was one of the "obvious" ones. And just as you say. She is, in a way, an "anti-Ripley" - she's more of an anti-hero, though if you look at her from the point of view that she is Ripley, well, that makes it quite interesting.

Heck, I still sort of pity that she died, now that I think of that.

Me too. I thought she was a very interesting character, but the film didn't really have much for her to do.

EDIT:

Vickers as Ripley: disappears with the captain of the ship for a quick shag (admittedly this was never filmed for Alien, but was scripted. And Ridley left it out because it seemed a bit iffy that they'd do this after Kane dies. But similar good judgement is omitted from Prometheus.).

I got a bit of an Alien 3 vibe from the pregnancy bit and the little surprise scene at the end.

Here's one I'm surprised nobody mentioned yet:

During the scene with the hologram of Peter Weyland, part of Jerry Goldsmith's score(or an arranged version of it anyway) can be heard in the background.

Also, the title sequence.

The pregnancy bit was even 100% reference to Alien 3, I don't recall the exact quote, but David and Shaw were almost quoting Aaron and Ripley. Shaw was something like "I want to see it" and David (unlike Aaron) refused to show her. But they used almost exactly the same words during the short conversation, as far as I recall.

I was glad that reference was in the film, seeing as Alien 3 is the most underrated film in the series and deserves more credit than most people give it.

Really? Cool, good catch!

I suppose Holloway's line to Fifield, "You ready to do this? I know you are!" in the transport could be in reference to Hudson's, "Ready to get it on? You know it!" in the APC, given the setting and the positions they're seated in.

Hey, likewise! Nice to see so many familiar folks still kickin' around.

Yeah, I noticed the Alien score in that scene. Was kind of distracting, even. They should have used it later on, as well as some more of Goldsmith's score like hints of the Jockey music when they enter the ampule room.

Quite!

Another reference I just recalled - not sure if I remember correctly, but isn't there some bit of somebody (Vickers???) listening to some classical music (not remember what it was anymore) aboard the ship, a la Dallas in Alien?

Now I'm not sure if I'm just imagining this, I only saw it once and my memory's a little hazy, but wasn't there some focal scene of a big metal thing (I literally can't remember what) closing (or perhaps opening) in a spiral motion exactly like the air-vent on the Nostromo?

Yeah, the bay with the pilot chair raising up and basically the door for the entire Drednaught ship (is that what they call it?) I think.
