Top 5 songs
« on: January 17, 2008, 11:05:16 PM »

Inspired by comments in the "What are you listening to?" thread I thought I'd start one dedicated to the songs that folks hold near and dear to them.

My Top Five Songs

"American Dream" - Love and Rockets
"Lucretia My Reflection - Sisters of Mercy
"Hey Nonny Nonny" - Violet Femmes
"Gimme Shelter" - The Rolling Stones
"Baker Street" - Gerry Raferty

I don't really have 5 absolute favorite songs, but here's the first ones that pop into my mind none the less:

Neil Young - Like A Hurricane
Manic Street Preachers - Suicide is Painless (Theme from MASH)
Ministry - Stigmata
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Black Flag - Tv Party

And Nelly... an avatar with make up and your favorite band is Coldplay.... *cough* emo *cough*  Wink

Long Way Down - Goo Goo Dolls ("I don't think I'll make it on my own" is pretty haunting for me)
Terrible Lie - Nine Inch Nails
Attack/Echelon - 30 Seconds to Mars (Equally meaningful songs for me, the first being a big fuck you song, and the second oh so unique)
Unsatisfied - The Replacements
Summer - Buffalo Tom

You know what? That might be the most definitive top 5 (ok, 6) I've ever done.

"Lucretia My Reflection - Sisters of Mercy
"Gimme Shelter" - The Rolling Stones

How come everyone chooses Lucretia from that album? Flood II, colours and neverland are much better. Fantastic album though Smiley Never been into the stones - but I love the Sisters cover of Gimme Shelter.

Anyway - here are mine. I'm not sure why there are no sisters of mercy tracks here. In fact there are far too many things missing from this list.

The Becoming - Nine Inch Nails
Nocturne No. 2 in E flat - Chopin (any good recording of it)
There is no if - The Cure (probably the saddest song ever written)
Voodoo People (Pendulum Remix) - The Prodigy (probably the only antidote to There Is no If)
The Piano has been Drinking - Tom Waits

I think that might be my list. Subject to change.

I propose that this whole desert island disks idea be changed. Instead of 'you have 10 albums' or 'you have 5 songs' to keep, how about you just get a 2 gig mp3 player. I ain't going to a desert island without a healthy selection of music!

Imagine being stuck for the rest of your life and getting a song stuck in your head. I don't know about you guys but if I get a song in my head I have to listen to it to get it out.

Imagine the rest of your life spent with an Avril Lavigne track stuck in your head. Imagine not being able to do anything about it. That's what Tom Hanks was thinking about when he tried to hang himself in Castaway.

Hey, hey. You, you. I don't like your girlfri *bang* *pause*
*bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* *click* *click* *click* *reload*
*bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* *bang* *click* Stop singing you bitch.
*smack* *smack* *smack*

'Hey you, what're you doing? she's dead. All you're doing is grinding bone into the stage. Put the fire extinguisher down and come with us'

*smack* *smack* *wet crunch*

I did it. I'm the greatest. She's dead. No more singing. I win. I win. Hahaha. *cut to*

Fuck, still on this island. Hey, hey. You, you. AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrggh.

God I hate Avril Lavigne. What was this thread about?  Shifty lookin' bugger...

Hmm, this is a hard done. Let's see what the list will be... Some of these I haven't listened for ages though. Not in any particular order... (except that Kinetic is the best fn' song ever! Cheesy)

Song - Artist:

Kinetic - Arcturus
To Thou Who Dwellest in the Night - Arcturus
Queen of Winter, Throned - Cradle of Filth
Unhallowed - Dissection
With Strength I Burn - Emperor

Well, without choosing 5 XTC songs...

Flat Earth – Thomas Dolby
There Goes The Fear - Doves
In Your Eyes – Peter Gabriel
Mr. Brightside – The Killers
The Wheel and the Maypole - XTC

Lack?
Most of the better bm bands are still active in some form. We're not the ones with Lordi as our most famous "metal" band  Mr Green returns

Screw you! Cheesy Children of Bodom and Nightwish are, but that doesn't make the situation any better  Grin

Well, Emperor and Immortal are back to do some festival gigs. That's not much... I don't even care about their latest albums anyways Wink Was nice to see them in Tuska last year though. Arcturus has stopped all activity (once again), Ulver is just electro-stuff, Satyricon turned into black rock, Mayhem is just too gay without Euronymous, etc...

I'm not saying it's any better elsewhere. There hasn't been any good new bands for ages (anywhere in the wolrd), or then I'm just too damn old and narrow minded Sad I've heard that Keep of Kalessin is the best thing from Norway for a while, but I haven't yet listened to them that much.

Sorry for the off-topic!
