Anyone here published?
« on: June 06, 2008, 03:28:59 PM »

Just curious. When I get back from Florida I'm planning on finishing a short sci-fi story and submitting it to Fantasy & Science Fiction magazine to see what they think and if they'll buy the option.

I know a woman who is a published poet, she is small time though.

That should count in some form or way.

The First Lady and I wrote a childrens book, and the enquires we've made into publishing indicate it's extremely difficult - so it's still sitting on the computer.

Submitting short stories to a magazine would be a good idea though.

I have ideas for several short stories and I figure it's better to develop those first before moving onto a novel. And it's better trying to get short stories published in a short story market first than trying to get a novel published without any published work whatsoever.

If I wasn't drunk right now it would've been even more obvious to myself that I restated what I said the first time in that second sentence. Idiot...

I have a few articles published in a low-profile local newspaper.  I did a brief stint before my boss stopped paying me.  I wasn't fired...he just ran out of money.  Roll Eyes

I'm published in a couple academic journals.

I would like to publish something science fiction/political some day...but I seem to be pretty lazy these days with my writing.

Political Science. I was co-author on a couple papers with my professors when I was in graduate school. Might have another one come next year that I have been working on with a friend (A media study of bias in the news). Probably shouldn't count the other ones as there is no way I could have done it on my own.

Published SF shorts in a few 'zines back in the 90s.

Had nothing published in any of the magazines that would pay you anything for it, but have (had!) a stack of very nice rejection letters instead.

Obviously I've not submitted anything in the last 5+ years, or I wouldn't be calling the rejection letters 'very nice.'  Time's a great healer!

I'm good friends with a best selling (new york times number 1) fantasy author.

Publishing only on-line. Once refused by publishing because 'they do not publish science fiction'.  Snooty Sci-fi is under-rated in Czech.  Sad

I was going to ask whether you found left-leaning or right-leaning bias, but I was afraid I'd start a flame war.  Long time ago on another board, I pointed out a reference to a "Neo-Conservative News Network" (four-letter code SPIN) which appeared in the splash for the menus in the Alien Quadrilogy DVDs.  (Look for it when it's loading the main menu.)  After a brief discussion about whether this was a reference to Fox's parent company News Corporation, things got political and heated.

But since the question's been asked, I gotta know: what were your conclusions?

Oh, and sorry about getting this thread so far off topic.

*insert proud expression here* YES! But it's been soo long. It's considered a classic. But now there are only few really good authors and scifi fandom is a minority. Overlooked and underrated.
Going to scifi bookstore is almost the same like to the sexshop ... only more embarrasing  Shifty lookin' bugger...
