It's life, Jim, but not as we know it....
« on: October 10, 2008, 04:34:09 AM »

2.8km down, living in 60°C without light or oxygen, surviving on a diet of uranium and synthesising all its own amino acids, Candidatus Desulforudis audaxviator thrives alone, detached from any ecosystem.

This is seriously the most extreme of all the extremophiles, and the xenobiologists must be over the moon as to what this indicates for the prospect of life on other planets (and, I guess, the origin of life here).

I admire its purity. A survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.   Shocked

Protoctela(Or how ever it is spelled, someone needs to correct me) ftw.

Just learned that word, while it may not be part of that family

I think life that survives without oxygen or water is down right awesome.

I heard about this in Biology class today. I think it is pretty awesome. Cool

This is, of course, going to result in the destruction of all mankind.

You all know it.

I was actually thinking that. If they brought it up here, it's only a matter of time before it mutates and kills every living thing on the surface, then goes back to subsisting on inorganic matter.  Evil

Might be quite a feat, given that exposure to oxygen will kill it.

That's what it wants you to think!

Does this blow what scientists have been saying about the necessary building blocks for life out of the water? Or did they theorize that something like this could very well exist?

It's still made of CHON.  It uses heat from uranium decay, it doesn't actually eat uranium.  This is a highly unusual organism, but it's not a paradigm-smasher.
