John Goodman looks creepy after losing all the weight. Check out Red State. You'll know what I mean. Drew Carey too. Ewh...

He looks a lot older now. That's what happens I guess. I've seen parts of Red State too, that movie had some pretty intense moments from what I can remember. Drive: The simplistic purity of the love story, the just-under-the-surface dangerous psychopathy of the driver, that God damned amazing soundtrack. Love it. A.
Your review makes me want to see this movie even more now. Everyone keeps talking about it. Just got back from seeing The Grey, really liked it too. The Open Boat meets To Build a Fire. Liam Neeson is amazing and the film was actually really emotional and gets you thinking... I guess I fall with Neeson's character when it comes to faith/religion which made me appreciate the film all the more (wanting to believe in something but knowing/feeling otherwise). Anyways it struck a chord for me. 8.5/10 Also, if anyone does go see it, there's a little something after the credits. It's quick but it leaves you with a better feeling nonetheless.

Drive.
Bit the bullet and bought the BR. I loved it when I first saw it and it hasn't lost any of it's impact. It's very similar to The American IMO: they're both fairly slow burning, but greatly pay off.
It's surprising how interesting Driver is in the film considering he mainly speaks in 3 or 4 word sentences at most. Can't believe how likeable Gosling can make a psychopath.
Oh and that soundtrack, my god that soundtrack.

When you see that scene in the diner, you know someone's skull is getting kicked in at some point. Take Shelter: Showed it to a friend. I still dig it. Wonder how long it'll take the BD to go down to a a non-ridiculous (less than 20 bucks) price. B+.

Chinatown
I can't say I've truly organised my thoughts on this film. Suffice to say it's been bettered. L.A. Confidential for one. Shane Black's career in general.
The Tournament
I recall not being in the best of mood when I originally saw it but somehow loving it in hindsight. Finally rewatched it under better circumstances and goddamn; this is one amazing action movie. 10 minutes of plot 90 minutes of balls out awesome Ving Rhames massacres motherfuckers action. Kelly Hu deserves a better standing in Hollywood, anyone who can look real fighting Scott Adkins in mad Russian mode has to be legit.

The Big Year
So this went under the radar it seems which is a surprise really with a lead cast of Wilson, Martin, Jack Black and including many well known faces with cameos throughout.
Not totally surprising after viewing though, the film itself is fine, infact its a lovely original film which is very gentle, easy going and an all round family film smiles guaranteed. The one problem is its not really that funny when its clearly suppose to be a strong comedy vehicle with that cast trio. Must mention a now old looking Brian Dennehy who has a great small role as Blacks father in this that really makes you feel good inside.
That aside it is a great feel good film with some amazing location work and if your into birds then all the better. A more straight laced comedy with all the big names playing it sensible which is nice but the down side being its not overly funny but it still manages to keep you interested.

The Woman in Black- Well from what I could tell it was an alright flick. There really wasn't anything groundbreaking with this movie, but Daniel Radcliffe has something about him that makes him a likeable actor and helped make this movie worth while... sadly every 15 year old girl in my area thinks so too. The audience really did ruin this movie for me. Asswipes. Drive- Friggin awesome movie. Couldn't help smiling like an idiot at every scene with Gosling and Mulligan. Kinda like this ---> Anyway I completely love this movie and the way it was pieced together.

Dungeons & Dragons (2000)
Hmmmm what to think of this little gem hehe I saw this at the cinema on release (yes) and at the time I kinda liked it for some reason, now upon a rewatch I can't see why I thought that.
I guess at the time the effects were a little more impressive than today's standards of course plus there weren't the huge amount of fantasy films there are these days so this was quite a special little event. Looking back now it really is a terrible film haha the acting from everyone is just abysmal and full O' cheese, Irons goes beyond taking the piss really with his rather queer hissing, cackling and facial expressions whilst his second in command played by Bruce Payne is just the campest guy I've seen for ages...oh and he has blue lipstick on too.
The film revolves around the cliched to max partnership of Wayans, doing his best Eddie Murphy impression, and Whalin trying to be heroic and cool. The pair are just awful together and completely not amusing in any sense, there is of course allot of attempted humour throughout but it all falls flat on its face hard.
There really is nothing to recommend here other than to laugh at, the effects are the worse cgi you will have seen for a major release (even though its an old film yes I know), tonnes of obvious bluescreen and even the costumes, makeup jobs and props all look cheap and tacky.
I still can't understand why Irons would agree to this, ditto Richard O' Brien of 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and quite the cult name here in the UK. I suppose its because his scenes were a homage to the classic 'Crystal Maze' he once hosted, almost a homage to him really, the guy is legend but this brings him down.
The film was indeed mauled upon release but at the time (twas much younger back then) I gave it some leeway, it kinda reminded me of the 'Mortal Kombat' film and how, even though it was weak, it still had a glimmer of quality. But now I simply cannot allow that leeway anymore, the film may be enjoyed by younger kids but basically its crap.

Watched The Thing from Another World last night, for the first time in around twenty years, and... it's odd. There are so many intersections with Alien beyond the initial plot device of discovering a derelict(-ish) spaceship to get the alien back to base.
The use of geiger counter as motion tracker; the decision to use fire to combat the seemingly impregnable alien; the fashioning of a(n extremely crude) flame-thrower to do that; the science division's general dubiousness; HQ preferring the alien's unharmed. These are all things I'd attribute to Alien rather than TTFAW, but it obviously got there first. (I guess I could include the Thing's chitinous exterior and the facehugger's outer layer of polysaccharides also.) The alien cuts the power as well!

Captain America: The First Avenger
This remains, to me, one of the standards of summer blockbuster cinema. It's fun, it's got a good story, the characters and acting are fantastic across the board, the relationships between the characters are warm and believable, they actually talk to each other like people than make DECLARATIVE STATEMENTS at each other. Of course the action is fantastic too!
John Carpenter's The Fog
One of my favourite horror movies. I'm not a fan of the genre, I could probably list roughly a dozen of them I liked. It just oozes with atmosphere and it's so expertly shot and framed.

There are so many intersections with Alien beyond the initial plot device of discovering a derelict(-ish) spaceship to get the alien back to base. I'm sure O'Bannon lists that as about the single biggest influence for Alien, above all the things they got sued/considered being sued for. I rewatched it recently in the lead-up to The Thing in theaters and was surprised the end with the geiger counters still held tension despite the age of the film and having seen it several times before. Could we also argue finding the dead bodies strung up as a precursor to the egg morphing scene?

I haven,t seen it for as many years as well. Strange thing is, the other night I was making some stir fry, and whilst cutting my cabbage... I thought about The Thing From Another World. John Carpenter's The Fog

It oozes with Adrians tits too!

Could we also argue finding the dead bodies strung up as a precursor to the egg morphing scene? Fuck, YES! Especially as they're there to help the Thing reproduce. Nice one!
