Sigourney Weaver And Ridley Scott To Team Up For Alien-Less ‘Alien’ Sequel? Published by Josh Horowitz on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 3:55 pm. There has been a neverending stream of speculation about the future of the “Alien” franchise probably since the very moment “Alien Resurrection” crashed and burned with most fans. Could James Cameron or Ridley Scott be weighing a return to the franchise or would we be cursed with more Predator crossovers? These are the questions that can try a man’s soul. But wait, there is hope! When I chatted with Sigourney Weaver the other day ( check out her take on the “Ghostbusters” sequel here), the actress definitely seemed to still have plans for her iconic alter-ego. “There’s definitely uncharted territory for Ripley,” she promised. However Weaver wondered if the alien itself can and should factor into another film after the exposure its gotten in two “AVP” films. She asked aloud “whether there’s unchartered territory for a creature who’s become somewhat debased by this computer generated thing. I haven’t seen ["Alien Vs. Predator"] but I just think if you overexpose the creature, that’s a mistake.” Weaver confirmed that she and Scott have discussed re-teaming for a fifth film, “Both of us feel a kind of commitment to that woman. He’s as much responsible for who she is as I am.” Then as she opined on the way the alien creature had been ruined in the recent films, Weaver’s comments got especially interesting. “We’d have to go back to the drawing board on [the alien],” she said. “Ridley said that right away when we first talked about [a fifth film].” And finally, the quote that’s gotten me mighty curious, “What we’re interested in is taking the character of Ripley and seeing what other science fiction story we can tell about someone who has lived several lives.” I didn’t really process what Weaver was saying at the time I suppose but it sounds to me like we might be less looking at “Alien 5″ and more of “Chronicles of Ripley.” Are Scott and Weaver thinking about an altogether different type of sci-fi adventure for the character? Color me intrigued. Are you? I say brilliant if it where to happen! Remember the day when Sci-Fi films where made to reflect situations of the current times? Imagine hero returning past her use-by date (a satire on the current franchise revival trend) to an eonomically ravaged future with a newly elected government administration exausting all it's resources trying to fix the fuck ups of the corrupt and inept MNC's like Wey Wall Mart. Not to mention the possibility of Ron Perlman being in a Ridley Scott movie! A true recipe for awesomeness! EDIT: here's the link.

It's an awesome feeling reading an interview with someone of the statue of Sigourney Weaver talking about Aliens. Ridley hasn't made a visually arresting film for ages, so it would be a good chance for him to flex his muscles in that aspect. Sounds like an amazing idea. Get HR Giger to redesign the Alien and Stan Winston's studio to do the effects.
Flush out the shit known as ADI along with their piss poor designs and start afresh. Sounds too good to be true, though.
(+) for the find, dudelove!

We've seen interviews like these pop up on a regular basis for years, with no real progress. All it amounts to is that some guy interviewed her, Alien 5 was brought up, and there you have it: "Sigourney Weaver Talks Alien 5" in big letters. Notice how it always boils down to "We talked about it" ("we" being Weaver and Scott/Cameron). Doesn't sound like there are any concrete plans.
Don't mean to sound pessimistic, but that's my take on all these interview statements. The closest we'll probably ever get to Alien 5 is Avatar.

I'm with Dutch, we see comments like this on a regular basis with absolutely no headway happening. And I also can't seem to get excited about an Alien film without the Alien in it. I'm sorry, but that would be just stupid. How disappointed would Joe Moviefan be when he buys his ticket to Alien 5 only to watch a two-hour Sigourney Weaver sci-fi drama with no acid-blooded creatures in it? The three letters that come to mind are W. T. F.

It could be a cool movie, but it wouldn't be an Aliens movie. I am pretty sure I would be disappointed by that fact. I doubt Fox would ever go for it, anyway...so the argument is academic. Like Dutch and Hicks said, these Alien 5 ideas never get off the ground.

Remember... short, controlled bursts.

To be perfectly honest, I'm surprised Fox hasn't done another alien-only film. You'd think with Hollywood's remake/sequel/adapt a toy, cartoon, comic or old TV show craze that this would've been done by now.
But if it means getting a better film, I'm willing to wait a while.

[sarcasm]Oooh! I wanna see a movie about Ripley's last trip before her voyage on the Nostromo! They can end it with her kissing little Amanda goodbye and telling her she'll be back before Amanda's birthday![/sarcasm]

Good idea! It can be a RomCom, and she can leave her dream man with the kid.
Then they can do a sequel about Amanda and the fiance coping with Ripley's presumed death.

Personally, the idea of a Ripley-only sequel/whatever has me very interested. The Alien franchise has written itself into a brick wall, but this could be quite a unique way around it. There's plenty of room for expansion and I would love to see the Alien universe fleshed out a bit more (especially if Scott's at the helm). Plus there's the added bonus of not messing up the Alien any further. Any future installment would inherit the task of measuring up to the fans' (possibly unreasonable) expectations -- but there's no precedent for a movie like this, so there wouldn't be any expectations. Of course, it wouldn't be an Alien film; just a Ridley Scott dystopian SF drama featuring Ripley. I'm cool with that.
Yes, I came out of hiding just to add my two cents.

Remember. Ridley Scott wants to do The Forever War, a Fox film, which deals with a person who has been hibernating for long stretches of time and whose life has been consumed with fighting an unseen alien enemy.
Just stabbing in the dark here.

I would love this movie.
And I think this could be a movie that shows that the aliens (if the aliens are in it at all) are only the tip of something much bigger.

Why would people like a alien movie that has no aliens?

Open mindedness? Then it would just be called.

What about a Ridley Scott Sci-Fi movie that happens to have Ripley in it?

Don't call it Alien 5 then.
Don't allude it is in anyway connected to Alien. It is a movie about Ripley.
But then again everyone associates Ripley with Alien, so that would not work either.
