To be honest, I wouldn't mind a TV series set in the Alien universe, with the Aliens only appearing occasionally, if at all. Wait Hypersleep doesn't count as time dilation? No, as if you'd sent the Nostromo out to Sade-138, and the Sulaco out to it 57 years later, then the Sulaco would arrive first. As a result, the war can end quickly rather than lasting for tens of thousands of years, as all Earth would need to do would be to send progressively faster ships out to spread and gather news. There's other stuff you can do with Forever War, future/culture shock, the world passing you by, unseen vietcong aliens, being a MILF in a highly sexualised society and not getting any because everybody's gay. Have you noticed that much of this was done in Aliens? John Flynn made an interesting comparison that Aliens was Starship Troopers and part The Forever War, although I've no idea if Cameron ever read the latter.

Originally I had the line "Stuff that Cameron only barely touched upon in Aliens" but I took it out before I posted. I felt like I was lowblowing Cambo.

Well, he wanted to make a rip-roaring roller coaster ride, not a introspective scifi drama. I think he deserves kudos for putting in some subtext, while still making one of the greatest action movies of all time. If he went the other way, his career may have unfolded quite differently.

I don't know if this is on topic or off topic at this point, but again I'm very much fine with the fifth alien movie not having the traditional bunch of bugs that we're used to.
But I still think it counts as an alien movie because Ripley, as far as I'm concerned, is part alien. She is the continuation of the hive of aliens we've been dealing with since Aliens because she's inherited some part of them. And I would say that would have to play some part in the next film. Maybe she loses her humanity. Maybe she turns out to be the villain instead of the hero. I don't know, but I do know I liked some of the stuff Sigourney Weaver was doing with Ripley.
And if you somehow manage to stick another species of alien in there then I'll be pleased.
Or maybe we encounter the new species and find that it's actually our old favorites after a couple million years of evolution (the ones weave met so far would be their version of cavemen). OH... and the evolved "aliens" have become all peaceful but recognize Ripely as being part of their not so peaceful ancestors. At which point they become not so peaceful and seek to kill her because of the risk they think she poses.... hmm... wait... that sounds a lot like what Cal was trying to do in A4...
And this is why I'm not going to be writing the fifth film.
The point... Ripely is alien enough for the next one to still be an alien movie. Thank you.

Exactly. I didn't want to look like I was taking a shot at Cameron or Aliens, that's why I left it out.

We are constantly being hit from both sides on this. Watch out, Thedus, she's just done another one! --EDIT-- Watch out, Thedus, she's just done another one! 15 December 2008 Moviehole had the chance to talk to Sigourney Weaver recently - for her new pic "The Tale of Desperaux"- and couldn't let her go without asking what the chances are of another "Alien" flick coming to fruition. Considering Weaver recently reunited with her "Aliens" director Jim Cameron on his science-fiction epic "Avatar", the subject would've had to have at least come up, yes? ''No, I don't think so", Weaver tells us. ''You know, we talked about Aliens. It was a great experience for both of us. I think he was busy kind of recycling Terminator, because there's a Terminator IV now. And, you know, I don't think we have a deep, pressing need to finish the saga although it does definitely feel unfinished to me. And I think if I wanted to go and have a meeting with Jim about it, I'm sure he'd be game". Weaver isn't ruling out another sequel but says it's unlikely. ''You know, nothing would surprise me in this business. I think it would be very hard to resurrect, because I think the character of the alien has been too exposed in those Alien Versus Predator movies, which I never saw. So, you wouldn't be able to use that. You'd have to reinvent some of that.'' http://www.moviehole.net/200816949-alien-saga-unfinished-says-weaver

Watch out, Thedus, she's just done another one! Watch out, CanadianHero67, they might do another one! Dec 17, 2008 "I think they're going to do Ghostbusters 3 and Aliens 5," Weaver said, confirming the many Internet rumours about these sequels, but not necessarily her participation in them. "I love science fiction. I love the character of Ripley. And the character I'm playing in Night Train is very like Ripley, a woman cop. "I miss Ripley. She was really interesting, and I'd love to play her as an older Ripley. But I don't think (studio) Fox will ever give me that opportunity. I bet they come to me and say, `We want to recast Ripley and have you do a walk-on,' something like that. They're men; they don't understand how dynamic and cool older women are!" http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/555043The plot thickens....

Add more corn flour. If they do do an Alien 5, I'm lining up to see it 6 months before it even begins shooting

THE ARTICLE
They are! Goddamnit thats not all! There needs to be more! And all this bullshit, needs to be kissed goodbye! Yeah, that was pathetic. Now I really want to do an Alien story. Ripley 8 remembers via genetic memories, and then starts to act more like Ripley. Or something like that.

Ah, yes, I can see it now over at the Exec office. "Ripley is half Alien. Therefore we can use this excuse to turn her into another actress, de-age her into a new replacement -- hell -- we could even make it a twist and have Ripley mutate into a man!!" Maybe Ripley is just going to regenerate every four films. Dadada-dum Dadada-dum Dadada-dum EEEOOOOOW!

It was my understanding... and I don't remember where I read it... that Joss Whedon had planned on continuing the series with that very thing in mind. The genetic crossing was going to turn Ripley into a younger Ripley. One with super ass kicking powers. Because that's his thing. Young girls that kick a lot of ass. Ellen Ripley the Alien Slayer.
