Maybe not even that. Those two statements do not conflict with each other in any way. It would be as if you had finished dinner but didn't ask for dessert. Then, someone places a bowl of your favorite ice cream in front of you and you eat it because it tastes good to you.
Did you need the ice cream? No. Are you glad that it was there? Sure.

AVP and AVPR did not generate as much money as Fox had estimated they would, that is a fact. I never said they didn't turn a profit. I understand Fox like other companies makes movies to make money. However unlike other companies it seems as of late Fox chooses to sully the reputation of cherished series to turn a quick buck rather than stay true to the original source. Fox has gained a reputation for making below quality movies. I'm not going to dispute that Fox has made some bad films and is known for loving only the bottom line; however, even the worst hitter can knock one out of the park once in a while. Depends if you are a chronic pessimist or not. How do you see your glass? I myself love Alien3, far more than the 80's crap JC gave us with Aliens. I do however understand Alien3 has severe flaws. Then came AR, AVP, and AVPR which were all terrible, you can label that as my opinion but I happen to have a majority of critics on my side. Fox has shown no evidence to make anyone believe things will change concerning a future movie involving the alien.
I think you're missing the point I'm trying to make. The Alien series doesn't need a resurrection (no pun intended) it is fine with how it is. I believe the original Alien never needed a sequel and is perfect as a stand alone movie. I feel any new addition only takes away from its uniqueness. I love the movie and I want nothing more than for Fox to leave it alone. You're contradictions are going to make my head explode! You say you didn't like Aliens, Alien 3 was severely flawed (it had its problems, but considering the way the production went, I'm actually impressed with the final outcome!), and that Resurrection was terrible... Then you turn around and say the franchise is fine how it is... Call me stupid, but I don't get it. You First off the Star Trek series has nothing on Alien, and this new Star Trek is full of plot holes and lacks any form of deep meaning. I never said it had deep meaning, I just said I enjoyed it and felt it was a job well done of rebooting the franchise. I'm simply offering my opinion on my favorite movie, if you take offense that is your fault, not mine. I'm not the one throwing hateful words at certain people.
I haven't taken offense to anything you've said, just calling it as I see it.

I love a few Hanna Montana songs, they're terrible but I can't help but find them catchy. I'm not saying everything I've ever enjoyed or liked has been absolute gold.
Thank you Mal for clarifying things.

Hicks,
I never wanted an Aliens or an Alien3 but Fox decided to give them to me. I can live with that trilogy, I can't stand AR or the AVP films. When I say the series is fine as is I'm simply acknowledging that what's done is done. I only expect worse from Fox and they've done nothing, NOTHING to make me feel otherwise. So of course I'm going to believe the series does not need any new movies added to it.
A majority of the original Star Trek films were piss poor, Abrams could have done the same with RoboCop.
Taking a classic like Alien and adding a backstory/prequel is not a good idea. If you think it is please share with me why you think so.

And then proceed to bitch about how you didn't want any desert and didn't need it in the first place? Everybody is entitled to their opinion. Even people who disagree with other people's opinions. You might not even think that everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I believe that you are entitled to that opinion. I also believe that I am entitled to believe that LV's statements were a bit contradictory, and that his opinion about Alien being better off sans sequels is wrong. It's my opinion, you see.

Personally I don't like the first one or the fifth one. And the only good Next Generation movie was probably First Contact.

What did you think of the new one? I thought it was entertaining but quickly started to dislike it after talking with others and seeing it a second time. It was VERY lighthearted and full of plotholes IMO.

So of course I'm going to believe the series does not need any new movies added to it. Hey, that's fair enough. And I don't necessarily disagree with most of what you're saying. Just didn't like how it was being said. A majority of the original Star Trek films were piss poor, Abrams could have done the same with RoboCop. Now, that I don't agree with. Treks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 were all good (in my opinion, of course). Only ones I didn't like were The Final Frontier (seriously, wtf?!) and the last two Next Generation films. But alas, this is not a thread about Star Trek! Taking a classic like Alien and adding a backstory/prequel is not a good idea. If you think it is please share with me why you think so. Never said it was, just said at this point this is probably the best we're going to get. Personally, I'll take any opportunity to see my favourite franchise onscreen over nothing at all. Then again, I might live to regret those words...

Thank you for seeing my point, I see yours now. We're just 2 different Alien fans. I enjoy the original and would like nothing more than for Fox to give up on the series and never put the alien creature on film again. You on the other hand want to see the alien again on screen. Be careful what you wish for

Honestly, this might make me sound like an idiot or an ignorant git, but I had so much fun watching it that I just didn't care about the plotholes. I mean, shit, it's Star Trek. You're almost guaranteed to get plotholes. As long as we had fun watching it, that's all that matters until I see it again. But alas, this is not a thread about Star Trek! Uuuh... uh oh.
