How is (supposedly) telling me to fuck off, responding to an opinion?

Nel wasn't saying 'fuck off if you don't like the film', he was saying that if you hate a film based on nothing but that it's maybe getting made, then 'gtfo and stay out.'  Makes sense, 'cos there's nothing to contribute in any discussion - film could be the best film ever made, but because it's an Alien prequel/sequel/spin-off, it's automatically regarded as shit regardless.

Hence how he was responding to an opinion.

Telling someone to "gtfo and stay out" is the equivalent of Fuck You.  There are plenty of reasons to make the conclusion this movie will fail other than simply "it's another alien movie".

I suppose the root of the matter, and the point many of us are trying to make, is if you want to hate it from the outset, and have nothing constructive to add to the discussion, then don't participate in said discussion. That'll make things easier on all involved.

This thread is meant for discussion related to the news that a supposed prequel to Alien is in development.  That is what I've been doing, discussing the news and how it relates to me as a fan of the original.  I've simply offered my 2 cents on why I feel it is a bad idea.  I don't see what the problem is.

gtfo = get the fuck out = fuck off.

There's nothing to hate yet but the idea of a direct prequel to Alien, which is dangerous no matter how much either side will try and spin it, which as you can understand would make people uneasy. It makes me uneasy. Why should I fuck off if I'm uneasy?

Maybe I'm too lazy to check all the earlier pages/posts, but... this seems like a good (ish) idea. A prequal would deal with a lot of the issues that any Alien remake would bruing about (Ripley). I'm not saying it's definately a good idea, but they are going about it the right way.

Only on IMDB.  The RT reviews are generally from around the time of release.  Like the shitty Alien3 reviews.

Yep, to back that up Resurrection is like the fourth or fifth best reviewed fourquel in existance. Basically the Alien series critically has held up better than iconic franchises like Superman, Batman, Terminator, Rambo, X-Men and Rocky.

The only fourquel to get rave reviews is Die Hard 4.

And in my opinion Rocky 4 and Rambo 4 were both better than Die Hard 4! Tongue

Cabal,

While I'm against any new form of movie involving the alien I would absolutely prefer a sequel rather than a prequel/backstory.  Part of Alien's brilliance was the mystery behind the creature as well as the SpaceJockey's reason for even being around it.  The AVP movies brought zero credibility to the franchise and did not add any credible information about the alien.  A prequel/backstory concentrating on the alien creature would do far more damage to the series than either AVP movies.  At least with those movies those involved in making them had to invest time to the predator as well.

I can't see why it would. If it's done well, why would it hurt the franchise. I know you don't want it to change or have any other movies done, but I like the idea of seeing something new. You seem dead set on disagreeing, but I really really really would enjoy it. I don't care about the supposed damage, I want another movie.   Pray

It can't be done well.  Alien was never meant to have any of its mystery revealed.  A new movie will never do justice to the imagination fans have grown to have thanks to the original leaving many of its questions up to the viewers interpretation and wonder.  I understand there are those out there that would like to see another alien movie, I just hope you realize you're going to be let down once again.  Some on here have a problem with me being against the movie simply because of its existence; well Fox has not earned me viewing it any other way.  They've pissed on this franchise for over 2 decades, I don't see it changing just because it's a step in a different direction.

Absolutely, and plenty of reasons to conclude that it may succeed as well.  But the 'gtfo' comment was directed towards your post where you say that There is no way this movie will be anything but the usual crap Fox turns out.  Hell even if it is amazing I will still hate its existence.  That wasn't exactly constructive!  Wink

Discussing why you think it may be bad, or good, is great - I mean that's what forums are for.  But a straight out condemnation of something based on personal feeling with the additional complicating factors that nothing could change your viewpoint and that you felt that we were wrong for not seeing it as you did is pretty close to trolling (although I know that's not what you were doing, and I'm not implying that you were).

Later posts, absolutely great.  Don't worry about it.  Keep discussing.  There will probably be more swearing ahead, maybe not even in abbreviated form, but we're all adults, we can handle it.

On the discussion front, Limited Vertigo:

They've screwed up the past 4 movies involving the alien, what makes anyone think this cycle will change.

Well, if it's a cycle, we shouldn't want it to change, we should just want it to continue to where it loops round and a film as good as Alien can be made again!  Wink

On the other hand, if it was a downward linear progression, where each of the films was worse than its predecessor, we may want to think about why that happens.  Is it really possible that somebody could make a film worse than AVPR?

gtfo = get the fuck out = fuck off.

There's nothing to hate yet but the idea of a direct prequel to Alien, which is dangerous no matter how much either side will try and spin it, which as you can understand would make people uneasy. It makes me uneasy. Why should I fuck off if I'm uneasy?

Oh, for God's sake, dudelove.  He wasn't saying fuck off if it makes you feel uneasy, he was saying fuck off if you think it's going to be shit based solely on the fact that it's being made.  Look at Nel's original quote:

Quote
Seriously, if you don't like it this far in when absolutely nothing has been done at all about it except given a go ahead mark from TS then gtfo and stay out.

Nothing has been done, no plot, no characters, no setting, no nothing. Seriously, just gtfo if you already hate something that has got nothing even concrete yet.

What is so hard to understand about that?  All of us feel uneasy about it, we'd be fools not to.
