Kotaku has posted up some concept art for the recently canned Obsidian RPG Aliens: Crucible: Umm... seriously, if that's the kind of designs we were going to see in the game, kind of glad it was cancelled... More at Kotaku. Thanks to AvP Spectrum for the tip.

Seriously! What is that thing? A Mole Cricket Alien? Looks like it would fit better in Resistance 2 than an Alien game. ..And the second alien design shown over there looks almost like a direct lift of Kenner's Panther Alien. No thank you!

I knew that looked familiar! Maybe the got all their "concepts" from some old action figures laying around the studio...

Well, maybe not a great design for an ALIEN... but I would be pleased if this were an inhabitant of the ALIEN homeworld. That I wouldn't mind.

I think the 'Panther' one is kind of cool. Too wide of a stance, seen on that head-on shot, though. Other than that, looks like a nice mutation or genetically-modified something or another.
The Hulk looks like a piece of shit, though.

It's like they didn't even try to make it resemble an Alien until the last minute, then slapped some tubes on it.

Sometimes the scariest things come from within

I'd rather see a bunch of cyborg xenomorphs than a bunch of those things running around.

Awful yes, but those things might not even have made it into the game! Still wish we could've had more info on this game..

Remember... short, controlled bursts.

I'm probably the only person here who likes the big Alien. Though it calls into question what exactly would its purpose be in the hive.
I definitely get the whole stole-from-Kenner toys-idea. It does look like it could belong to the toyline.

Think it's just the result of the Aliens taking on the attributes of the planet's indigenous life. At least, they did concept work for indigineous life as well, so I imagine that's the idea.

It is ind of cool, but looks a little too stylized for my taste The Hulk looks like a piece of shit, though. LOL! True, but what happened to the alien remaining inherently alien? Looks like they were taking a lesson in genetics from Kenner. The Hulk (to borrow Beckmen's name) looks less alien and more like... something else. ...Not to mention the alien has always been rather lithe and angile. This thing looks like it would have a hard time out running it's own shadow. I see lumbering beast of burden here, not an agile predator.

Think it depends on what the resulting Alien is designed to be a predator of, I reckon. If the Alien came out of something like this: Then we'd expect the Alien to be designed as a predator of that lifeform. It might not look lithe and agile to us, but it probably does to the indigineous life above! It's a bit like what would happen if an elephant was unfortunate enough to be impregnated. The resulting Alien should be designed to be strong and sturdy enough to carry other hosts - in this case other elephants - which would make it seem very unlithe and unagile to us humans.
