It's kind of obvious at this point, but for what it's worth, our sources at Fox just confirmed this as official with me.

Hey, this kind of stuff has fallen through before. At least this is as official as it will be until Fox announces it.

It was good to hear it out of the horse's mouth, actually.

I haven't felt this excited since AvP was first confirmed so many years ago.
I mean, I wasn't at all excited about a prequel to Alien...but with a director from the series returning who started the whole thing, that'd be very exciting. The only thing is...the times they brought in seasoned directors to the franchise has never really been that fulfilling. Jeunet and Anderson are who I'm thinking of.
But, while those two along with Fincher were mainly figureheads, Ridley Scott has a lot of weight to throw around now.

Take a gander at the budget anyone? Could be in excess of $100mill if Scott is on-board. If that doesn't guarantee us a fucked up, nightmarish bio-mechanical world then nothing will! I'd say a large budget would lessen the chances. More money, less risks the studio would be willing to take. They've already showed they don't want to take risks by holding out for Ridley.

I am not as excited as you guys seems to be, for the following reasons. Get ready for some pessimism:
1: In my opinion (and I realize I am in the minority here), Ridley only makes good movies half of the time. He's already made one great Alien movie. Then again, he has yet to make a great movie since 2001, so maybe he is do for another classic. But still, moral of the story is: I don't hold the man in such high regard as others.
2: It's going to be a prequel film that explores the alien's origins. Sure, if they need to do this, Scott is one of the better men for the job. However, that mystery and all of us fans creating these theories and stuff is so much a part of the fanbase, and so much a part of the fun of the movies (especially the first!), that will all be diminished greatly. Even if it rules. If it ends up being something that is disappointing, or downright retarded....it'll be even worse. Ridley Scott might end up raping our childhoods on this one.
So my reaction to the news: It's good news, for sure. But doesn't guarantee a great film, and the risk of disappointment is just as high as ever.
But....we will see. I'll be with you guys, following this until it's ultimate end.

They've also hired someone who hasn't actually had anything produced to write the script.

That totally slipped my mind. His IMDb page doesn't even have any movies on it! He has films in development, you can only see those if you have IMDb Pro. Talk about untested.

now, finally, the Alien Prequel at last! Ridley is in the director chair once again. to direct the Alien film reboot.how about the story of how the creatures:how they evolve and how they were created.probably from the egg and then they started to grow into a warrior but how they're created and also the story about the derelict ship (alien ship) got there in the 1st place? from the company or someone let them loose? rather read the novel when it comes out and especially the film too. and one more thing: this IS the the 5th Alien film, but going backwards in time? before OUR time?

Apparently he's supposed to be the shizzle. Shadow 19 and Passenger are said to be kick-ass sci-fi films. Whether they are or aren't remains to be seen. Plus, don't forget, Dan and Ronny were pretty much untested too. now, finally, the Alien Prequel at last! Well, I think the man has tremendous talent and his involvment for me at least is almost a guarantee that the movie will be top notch 2: It's going to be a prequel film that explores the alien's origins. Sure, if they need to do this, Scott is one of the better men for the job. However, that mystery and all of us fans creating these theories and stuff is so much a part of the fanbase, and so much a part of the fun of the movies (especially the first!), that will all be diminished greatly. Here I agree with you, but it all depends whats the story's gonna be about. If its gonna show spacejockey's origins or alien origins, thats gonna be a franchise killer for me. the derelict and alien mystery is probably THE most exciting part of the franchise for me, and adds tremendous amount of spookiness to the first two movies, first one especially. It would be very unfortunate to have the mystique vanishing in front of our eyes

Plus, don't forget, Dan and Ronny were pretty much untested too. True (Although, shit, at least O'Bannon had Dark Star), but you're forgetting - Their script was friggin' terrible as anything other than a Roger Corman B movie, which is what it was intended for. If it wasn't for Hill and Giler's rewriting we wouldn't have the movie we do now

This is terrible news. I was hoping it would at least keep going back and forth with Fox undecided on who should write/direct. Now this means it's that much closer to really happening. Please let the world end tomorrow so I never see this abomination.
