 D'oh!

I swear I didn't use to be this fucking retarded. What's happened to me?

Though this is partly explained by the fact that I haven't had a phone with an actual keypad since 2003, just the "qwerty" types that have letters and numbers separately.

Ok. I gotta be a retard again: when you talk with numbers, how do I know which letters do you mean?

For example, the number 8 could be any of the letters T, U and V and the number 4 can mean either G, H or I. Thinks

I'm sorry if my question wasn't worded correctly, I had a drink, I had another, now I'm drunk, oh motherfucker....

Vodka is the best thing my piece of shit neighbours ever came up with. Well, vodka and all the scrumpadoochus foods.

Is this feasible; in a science-fiction type way?

Quote
A method of transporting one's consciousness (as data) back in time, thus creating an alternate reality that begins at a point prior to the point of departure.

Trying to write a movie that hinges on this principal. But I know jack-shit about quantum mechanics and all that stuff.

Feasible in a theoretical, SF kinda way!

From the viewpoint of theoretical physics, whatever method you're using you're normally confined to travelling back only as far as when the time machine was first built (this is one end of the Cauchy horizon). If this is a problem you could always use a naturally occurring spontaneously generated wormhole, which would be microscopically small (but would then explain why you're sending back somebody's consciousness rather than an actual somebody) and surprisingly stable.

Downloading/uploading consciousness: theoretically possible because it's 'just' information, probably will never happen in the real world, but everybody does it in SF anyway!

Alternate reality - yeah, fine, pops up all over the place in physics and SF as well.

Uploading and downloading a consciousness is (IMHO) impossible because the consciousness is dictated by the architecture of the brain. Which synapses have connected, which ones are used/exercised more often, what memories and experiences are stored in the traversing chemicals and neurons... All shape who we are. To create a memory or experience, you have to physically use a part of the brain, change it, modify it, to an infinitismal degree, by physically change it none the less.

Sorry to piss on your parade.

If consciousness is dictated by the architecture of the brain and you can map that architecture, and you can map the processes that go on in a brain, then (theoretically) you can simulate it. Which means that you could simulate consciousness, which means that you could be able to download that simulation to another location.

I'd say it's theoretically possible (if consciousness is reducible to the workings of the brain) it just then becomes 'merely' an engineering problem - a bit like time travel!
