Miscillaneous stupid questions

The name says it all. If you are like me, you have thousands of stupid questions, but no answers. I`m talking about something that everyone knows but not you. This thread is for asking those embarassing questions, and hopefully; getting answers. If you have some of those, keep `em coming. I`ll start:

-What`s the difference between "a fan" and "a fanboy"?

-What is "ping"? (used in net gaming)

-What is "noob"?

-What is "crom"? (I think it`s used in net gaming too)

-What`s with this "Darkness and AvP-Galaxy" -thing? I`ve heard like a million people mention it, but I still don`t get the joke.

Some of these are a bit subjective, but I'll try to answer the best I can.

First off, the difference between a "fan" and a "fanboy" is that the former is a more general term, meaning someone with a passing admiration for something, while a "fanboy" is a purist bordering on obsessive.? For example, I would consider myself a Star Wars fan -- I like the movies, know a bit more about them than the average person and could probably hold a decent conversation on them, if I must.? However, I have no interest in delving into its extensive expanded universe, do not frequent related message boards, don't have a collection of merchandise and wouldn't list it as one of my primary interests.? Alien, on the other hand...

"Ping" is a measurement of how long it takes information to travel from one Internet connection to another.? So if you're playing a game online, a higher ping would indicate a slower/farther away connection and hence would create more lag.? I think that's how it works, anyway.

"Noob" (or "n00b") is a term used mostly by gamers, a variation on "newbie", referring to someone new, doesn't have much experience or generally sucks.

And lastly, Darkness used to run one of the best AVP news sites prior to the film's release.? I don't really know what the "joke" is.

It's nice to be mentioned. The "joke" is that I started a small site called AvPGalaxy back in 2002 dedicated to AvP2, the game. I branched out into other areas and it became an avp news site in 2004. Despite suffering hosting problems, it became hugely popular in just a few months in the run-up to AvP coming out. What happened was, I saw AvP when it came out and I was furious at what I saw. So furious that I shut my site down literally overnight. Members from my forum, then created AvPOutbreak and I disappeared for a few months and began visiting another avp forum and eventually winding back up at Outbreak.

A lot of people don't like me very much because of it. It's always something I've regretted but at the same time, I hate Fox for what they did to the series. If Alien 5 or Predator 3 ever got the green light, I'd consider bringing it back.

Darkness, although I visited Galaxy quite frequently (as you were updating the site pretty much daily), I can sort of understand where you're coming from.? Had I invested months of my time, energy and resources into bringing news of a highly anticipated film, only to find out it's total crap, I'd probably have been pissed too.? I don't know how I'd react, feeling as though all my efforts were in vain.? I hope you understand that we're all hugely appreciative for the great news and content you brought us on a regular basis.
