Why is a Lone Alien more hostile then when it is in a hive?
« on: February 17, 2010, 02:39:48 PM »

Both in Alien and Alien3 aliens are far more hostile than in Aliens and Alien Ressurection, killing every time it has the chance--especially in 3, where the Alien killled nearly all of the prisoners with the exception of... damn, forgot the survivor's name-- but that guy.

It could be that it's trying to establish a lair by killing any potential threats.  It may also intend to use their biomass to initiate a hive.

If you prefer the egg-maker theory, it might be that it's trying to create more eggs as well.

I think it might be both. If no queen, embryonic or otherwise, is present, then the alien will use its prey as biomass for the creation of more eggs, likely to attempt generation of a queen. If a queen is present (as on Fury 161), the alien will attempt to destroy all threats present, and use the material to nourish itself, possibly as a food store to feed the newborn queen. The Fiorina alien seemed to gorge itself on the inmates, perhaps it was creating reserves of nutrients to feed Ripley's queen? Or maybe it was an artifact of that alien's high-output metabolism? I think that it may be the former, the queen may need the extra biological nutrients to create her first eggs. Maybe the queen creates yolks in her egg-sack, which she then uses the same (egg-morphing) spores to morph the yolks into eggs while they travel toward the ovipositor? Thinks

The Resurrection Aliens killed a fair bit too.  The army guy in the cage, Elgyn, Perez, dudes in the lifeboat.

All of them were armed.  Many of the Fiorina 161 prisoners were not.

They could be naturally ill-tempered, and just react to isolation and strange environments by lashing out violently. If you really break it down, the first few kills in Alien and Alien3 are done when some people stumble into an area the creature is inhabiting.
