Joe Lieberman's suggested extending a current law that strips individuals of their citizenship if they enlist in a foreign military (bar Israel, curiously, and with lots of provisions to make it quite a murky law) to encompass those affiliated with designated terrorist organisations (or foreign designated terrorist organisations, depending on which quote you're reading!).

So here, at any rate, essentially it would be the US Dept. of State determining who is a non-citizenable terrorist.  Lone wolf types wouldn't be affected, neither would anybody coordinating an attack with an organisation not on the list.

Well, I'm glad to hear that.

But this doesn't really change much when it comes down to the meaning of my response.
In short: I was originally responding to Nev's post.

Which makes it okay to torture/execute/whatever those who aren't?

I'd rather have a tiny minority of non-guilty people treated harshly than a vast majority of guilty people walking out with a slap on the wrist.

Since 9/11, we've had a lot of our rights suspended via the Patriot Act and there is no evidence that we are more safe because of it.

And this changes the fact that it's just an opinion how? Eh?

What if your choice was between an equal number of non-guilty people being harshly punished vs. guilty people escaping punishment?

Using yourself and those you care about as examples of the non-guilty people to be treated harshly, what degree of harsh treament would you feel would be unjust?

I didn't say that it was no longer an opinion. I explained how such an opinion can be justified.

Here is where all this began:
http://www.alienexperience.com/forum/index.php/topic,7655.msg177586.html#msg177586

Clicking on that link shows that I quoted Nev's post, wherein he was explaining something to you. Nev was talking to you; I was talking to Nev.

No, I'd still pick my earlier choice.

Using yourself and those you care about as examples of the non-guilty people to be treated harshly, what degree of harsh treament would you feel would be unjust?

I already said there's no such thing as a perfect system.

I didn't say that it was no longer an opinion. I explained how such an opinion can be justified.

But my opinions can not? Eh?

I know - I even quoted you saying that, to show that I understood.  How brilliant is that, eh?  Wink

Sorry for asking, I just find it an incredibly tricky question to answer myself.
