A lot of footage, yes. That doesn't mean there's hours of new scenes and dialogue that we've never seen. Different takes, different angles, etc. Probably a good deal of establishing shots, beats with no dialogue, outtakes, whatever. Footage of licking himself and practicing civil disobedience.

At the risk of sounding silly: what's a "beat"?

I have to agree.  The number of truly unique scenes that were shot and cut from the final piece are going to be very few for any given movie, and these are the scenes I'm interested in wen it comes to deleted scenes.  I don't really care about seeing varying angles, or different takes of a known scene, or failed practical effects.  It's the rare and unusual I want.

It will be good to finally watch the scene with Burke cocooned. All I've ever seen of it is that grainy production still which has done the rounds on the forums for years.

Quote
A beat is a term used to describe the timing and movement of a film or play. In the context of a screenplay, it usually represents a pause in dialogue. In the context of the timing of a film, a beat refers to an event, decision, or discovery that alters the way the protagonist pursues his or her goal.

More artwork for the set. I'm  guessing  there will be multiple covers. I don't care for the Egg one, but the Facehugger one is cool. I wonder what's so "limited edition" about it?

Strange. But it looks like a standard-sized case, so it's at least an option for me. That freaking CD case thing the Deluxe Whatever Edition comes in is an abomination.

I imagine it'll be similar to the quad, and the films will be released individually a while after.

Well Ridley calls Alien a thriller on the Quad making of.

Despite what I really want him to be, Ridley is also one of the most commercial directors of the past 30 years (other than a few exceptions, each and every one of his films was instantly a product of its time), so I'm going to discredit him on this one.

"Thriller" isn't a real genre; it's what people call good horror movies when they're afraid to use the word "horror."

Nah, it's a proper genre in its own right (worth checking the wiki entry for - Aliens is a reasonable fine fit).

Well, if you want to shorten Aliens's genre (a science-fiction/horror/action) into one word, then I guess you can be lazy and call it a thriller. As far as using Wikipedia to categorize a movie...  Thumbs Down

A horror movie thrills, a science fiction movie thrills, and an action movie thrills, just in different ways.

How so?  I was mainly thinking of the passages on wiki stating that Thrillers may be defined by the primary mood that they elicit: fearful excitement and [t]hey also promote on moods, such as a high level of anticipation, adrenaline rush, arousal, ultra-heightened expectation, uncertainty, anxiety and sometimes even terror.  I though these summed up Aliens quite well.

I could've been disingenuous and said something along the lines of 'worth checking James Patterson's introduction to Thriller for - Aliens is a reasonably fine fit' but I ain't read it, except for the bit that's quoted on wiki.  Is that any worse?  What's better?

Well, yeah, there's a lot of overlap with genres, many of which have sprung up for purely commercial reasons.  Alien, for example, has its thriller elements (the corporate conspiracy, Ash as a spy) and an action scene or two, but overall it follows the conventions of the horror genre (and not, I'd argue, much of that of the SF genre).
