Dinosaur found with preserved pigment cells
« on: August 05, 2010, 09:48:30 AM »

A bit late, but this apparently happened in January:

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2010/01/100127-dinosaur-feathers-colors-nature/ (with a picture of what its color would've been like)

Another picture showing that the colors may have looked like.

Doesn't seem like they determined the exact color, but they did find melanosomes in the preserved hairy fibers on the creature's body showing it was countershaded (dark back, light stomach) and had dark stripes on its tail. Here's hoping that more dinosaur fossils will be discovered with melanomes, and not just feathered ones (I don't see why melanosomes wouldn't be preserved in scales, as well).

In the past ichthyosaurs have been found with preserved pigment cells, as well.

It seems the boundaries of what can and can't be preserved during fossilization are continuing to be pushed.

It looks like a Guinea Pig! Well coloured like one.

But dear God this is some sweet developments, first we find T-rex blood cells, then we have this.

This was already known to me for some time, however, there are two dinosaurs with melanosomes preserved, both Sinosauropteryx prima and Anchiornis huxleyi (the latter of which is coloured more like a woodpecker).
Whose to say that other specimens already prepared and described might not have preserved melanosomes too? Archaeopteryx, or Microraptor perhaps? They should go through the back catalogue and see what they find! This is definitely an exciting time for Dinosaur Paleontology! What next? Utahraptor DNA in a preserved midge in amber?  Wink

Yeah, as I said the news item is from January. I'm not as up-to-date with dinosaur news as I used to be... Tongue

True, until now they've never looked for melanosomes before so there's a pretty good chance existing fossils contain them as well. It would especially be interesrting in dinosaurs with large crests and sails, since these are thought to have been brightly colored.
