Don't get me wrong - I like well executed bubblegum music too, but when an artist seems to go out of their way to  say "hey, I'm strange... I don't care what people say so look how bizarre I can be... look at my new outfit," I tend to turn away and seek my entertainment elsewhere.  I want to be entertained by the music, not the sideshow the artist is trying to put on with their antics.
Frankly I think you should seperate the artist from the art. For instance, I like Limp Bizkit's music, but I won't deny Fred Durst is an immature prick.

Besides, I think it's a bit rash to dismiss Gaga's eccentricity as unauthentic. I know plenty of girls who are genuinely "weird" and eccentric and not just doing it for show.

I can separate the artist from the art.  I love Dali's work, and I find him fascinating as a human being, but there were times his antics and eccentricity were strictly for show (not always, but at times), and he could be a colossal prick... but I still love his work, and I still admire him.  He had a talent that was unmatched, and may well never be.   I really enjoy the Doors, and love Jim Morrison's poetry - as such I can totally overlook his antics and the fact that he became quite the asshole.  But here again there is an overwhelming talent - both among the band members and Morrison as a writer.

...Lady Gaga doesn't have the caliber of talent to rise above her contrived image.  If it weren't for her image and antics I doubt her music would be so popular. ...It's her angle.  It's her business move. It works for her, but I just can't embrace her music.  It's her image that drives it... not her talent.  Now if it was just music with little to no side show then I'd probably be able to get into it more.

PETA thought leather and fur was bad!

I like her as an artist (from the songs that I have heard) and I love her outfits. It's entertainment and her costumes are part of her performance/image.

Rihanna- she's very pretty but damn her voice seriously gets on my nerves. She sounds like she's whining in her music. Ack!

I think that was Gaga's way of saying "This is what my vagina looks like."

As if a few hundred people didn't already know by now.
