It's a problem with horror movies.

You need people who can act, but if you slap recognizable faces into it then you get the problem of people thinking more "Man, I love Brad Pitt" and less "Ohfuck nightmare monster". And it doesn't matter how well the actor does, the more known they are, the less people are going to be able to ignore they're watching an actor act.

When I hear casting for a horror movie, I don't really want A-listers -- I'd rather they raid good actors from TV shows. As popular and well-recognized as a TV show may get, for some reason it's still easier to ignore you're watching a performance than with an award-winning actor. I guess it's the amount of off-screen coverage each gets.

That being said, I think the only person who qualifies for being that notable would be Portman, and even then it's a bit of a stretch. I'm really digging the casting news because they're going for good actors who aren't in everyone's faces.

As long as Franco doesn't spend the whole movie doing a Christian Bale impression, then his casting is great IMHO.

If they're going to get a female Colonial Marine General, why not an actress in her 30's or 40's with a strong presence?

I'll bet you had a hair/beard combo like that in '82!

Not always.

Worst. Example. Ever. Arnie is Arnie. It's all he does.

I don't think Kurt Russell circa 1982 really counted as celebrity A-list, and besides, that was before today's overexposure.

Yet folks thought he was gonna lose.

I wouldn't count James Franco as celebrity A-list either.

I had both of them, but after '82!

I wouldn't count James Franco as celebrity A-list either.
With his hands in various projects, he might be A-list before the prequel is released.

Anne Hathaway... Seriously?  Let's just get Liv Tyler in here, why don't we.  Or was she already busy with another project?  Roll Eyes

James Franco?  I'm surprised Jesse Eisenberg, or Jake Gyllenhaal aren't being considered.

Keep adding pretty faces and this will look like an installment of Starship Troopers.

Yes. The motherfucker that took out Apollo Creed and The Body had a chance at taking Arnie.

I don't think very many were thinking that at all. More the usual "How's Arnie gonna beat this thing?". "Last man standing" is a movie trope, so all of the other characters (including Anna) were fair game, but the actor who's name is larger on the poster than the title of fucking movie...pretty safe.

I also doubt people thought Ripley was going to die in Aliens, too. Which is why killing Hicks and Newt was such a genius move in Alien3. You don't know what the expect now, the film-maker has turned the world upside down. But surely they killed those guys off to make you think Ripley might die, it was a trick. They won't actually kill her, right?

The debate about knowns vs unknowns...

Last time they cast unknowns in an Alien/Predator movie, they all fucking sucked (AvPR). Last time they cast well-knowns in an Alien/Predator movie, they all fucking sucked (Predators). People need to realize that the director of the film accounts for at least 50% of the movie's acting. I use Ben Kingsley as an example of this...

Fishbourne rocked, I'll hear nothing to the contrary and he improvised his whole role.
