Thanks for posting this...I just bought it! Even though I currently don't have a Blu-Ray player. I can't imagine finding a new copy at this price again with free shipping & no tax.

Watch all the Res enhancement pods.
Sylvain Despretz seesm to share the opinion of most fans in that the Alien and Newborn were somewhat lacking in terms of design.
And the opinions of the series as a whole as well as it's future had divided opinions. People like Gale Anne Hurd and Pat McClung hoped there would be more; Brian Johnson and Dan O'Bannon said it should've stopped after the second. Richard Edlund said, commercially speaking, they'd be stupid not to make more as long as they're making money. Ridley Scott said (circa 1992) that they should've been up to six movies by then an he probably would've made one of them.

I guess the Guv'nor's been keen to revisit the series for a while. That's a genuinely relieving sign for me.

I wouldn't go with the former personally.

Not to mention wise in the way a FRANCHISE works too.

Always amuses me that so many fans refer to 'franchises' while bemoaning the fact that studios are just in it for the money.

Well, in the film industry those people are usually tools. The kind of people who want an artist to paint a picture so they can make money off it, even it if just means the artist shits on the canvas.

So a guy who does special effects can't be considered an 'artist'? (Hope you're listening Stan...)

Watched Alien last night.
Now I'm not one to generally gush about the audio visual quality of flicks from format to format - but FUCK ME, THIS WAS AWESOME. Everything was so much sharper than I've ever seen before - the label one of Ash's consoles in the infirmary quite clearly says 'Electron Microscope'. All the buttons on the auto destruct are crystal clear - and seem to be in Hindi at least in part. I never noticed all the running lights on the refinery before. Or the vivid colours in Brett's Hawaiian shirt. The camera dolly rails on the floor when Ripley is approaching a ladder during the climax. Everything just pops.
The same with the sound too - maybe it's because I haven't watched it for years without a commentary track running - but I never noticed heartbeats leading up to Brett and Dallas's deaths. Or the sickening slopping when the chestburster pops out of Kane.
Cinema prints can get grainy and scratched. Alien on Blu-Ray 60" high defintion with 5.1 surround. Accept no substitutes.

but I never noticed heartbeats leading up to Brett and Dallas's deaths. I didn't notice it on the dvd until my dad mentioned it. It's one of those things he always talks about when we discuss Alien. He refers to it as one of the most subtle yet intense things he's ever experienced in the cinema. Better than any booms, bangs or crashes he's ever had thrown at him. The lucky sod. Wonder if the blu-ray can recreate that feeling for him.

Both of those scenes really utilize sound very well to set the stage. The Brett scene IMO is more suspenseful (I always love the use of sound effects instead of music in these types of scenes), but the Dallas scene has that desperation/nowhere to go feel to it. Two distinct styles of "horror".
I can't believe Alien didn't get nominated (and win) for Best Sound.
