Jeunet Disowns Alien Resurrection Blu-Ray Transfer
« on: November 19, 2010, 11:36:00 AM »

From Blu-ray.com:

French filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Alien Resurrection, has revealed on his personal blog that, unlike Ridley Scott for Alien and James Cameron for Aliens, he wasn't invited to supervise the remastering of his movie, included in the Alien Anthology Blu-ray. Jeunet has said that the BD of the fourth Alien installment has the picture quality of "a very mediocre DVD."

Jeunet sarcastically cites the tagline for the new box set: "On Blu-ray, everybody will hear you scream" only to add: "They got that right - scream with rage!"

On the other hand, Jeunet did supervise the remaster for the Blu-ray release of his first film, Delicatessen. He said that most of the sequences have been "de-grained," removing almost all the grain. He explains that there is some grain left "on some shots filmed on 400 ASA stock, and that would become too soft if we de-grained them more. The colors are like we had always wanted, and the result is, albeit imperfect, amazing if we compare it with what we were working from."

Jeunet's blog post (in French) can be found here.

A mediocre film deserves a mediocre BD. Evil

From the sounds of it, he's a DNR fucker. I want to punch him right in his googly fucking eyes.

I still say that had they brought in the right director, and did a proper rewrite, Rez could have been much better. Probably still the worst of the series, but maybe I could watch it without weeping.

With all due respect, I don't think it's fair to call A:R a mediocre film. It may not be a good Alien film but it's a more than competent handicraft.

I wouldn't like it any either if someone else went in and fucked with my film without my consent.

So I finally put the disc in. The transfer isn't great, actually. It lacks sharpness, it's over-all pretty dark, with mediocre contrast levels and poor shadow detail, and some shots are inconsistently bad. The colors are actually quite drab, but that seems to be intentional to me. It's not terrible, though. I'd probably give it a C+.

It's funny, the disc comes up with a USM logo, but then once the menu loads, it's back to Weyland-Yutani. It seems like for the most part, CdL didn't put as much love into this movie as the other ones. The W-Y anachronism on the menus and the mediocre transfer.

Kind of nit-picking with the WY thing though.

Alien Resurrection deserves every bit as much attention put into its transfer as Alien and Aliens. It's still part of the series and it should still have been restored to 100%.

Obviously, the same goes for Alien 3, which I'm puzzled by. It seems like a lot of effort was put into correcting the sound for Alien 3, but not the picture. I'm confused by this because The Digital Bits posted a badass making-of article for the Quadrilogy which explained that Lauzirika only wanted to do that set for Alien 3.

So, why he didn't put as much work into the transfer for it is beyond me.

Why he left out the other deleted scenes is as equally puzzling to me.  Thinks

JPJ has every right to be pissed off.  Here's a dude that's proud of his work unlike Fincher the Curmudgeon, and I reckon he's been shafted.  Whether you like the film or not, it had really nice production design, lighting and cinematography and deserved a LOT better.  I watched bits last night after watching Alien, and it was very disappointing.  Especially since the films general lack of popularity means it'll never get the treatment it deserves.

Though my Auriga map that they used on the Menus does make up for it a little.  Mr Green returns

Though in this case the lack of credit rankles a bit.
