I'm kinda inclined along the other way.

Offended governments bitch about perceived bias - and to be honest that's all well and good.  Can't see there's too much wrong about bitching.  Might cause a bit of embarrassment to the media outlet, might not.  The only disaster is one of PR.

Offended corporations tend to pull their adverts, which tends to be very costly to the media outlet.  They pull them like Toyota did when they felt maybe too much coverage was being given to a news story that maybe didn't show them in a positive light.  Or they pull them like Wrigleys did so they aren't associated with drama that might be a touch more controversial than they'd like.

But mostly it's the unintentional damage I find the most evil - worthy or niche programs getting canceled because they don't have enough viewers so they can't sell the advertising space at a reasonable rate, or kids being pumped full of adverts if they watch kids tv (and, jesus, I do not want my daughter finding out about Disneyland for as long as fucking possible!).

The federal government has been contributing funding to National Public Radio and the Public Broadcast Service since their inceptions. This has been going on for around 40 years over various administrations, regardless of whether there was a Democrat or Republican in office.

Everytime there is a change of Commander in Chief, there is no change in the reporting to reflect the current administration's policies. The reason why the Republicans want the funding to NPR and PBS cut stems from the firing of Juan Williams by NPR for comments he made about Muslims on "The O'Reilly Factor". After that, Fox News was only too happy to pick up their new poster boy and contact their local congressmen to give NPR a royal ass screwing.
