Regardless of anyone's subsequent statements, the Law of O'Bannon's Canon has first claim.  Wink

We are getting off to a fresh new start with this prequel, Scott was meant for it.

Or any sci-fi flick for that matter.  Star Wars prequels submitted as Exhibits 1-3, your Honor.

I think more scifi flicks should be set in the same universe as others, only tenuously related films.

Except when they're utter crap it kind of taints the "world" the classic film lives in. Paul Anderson's hunk of shit Soldier apparently exists in the same universe as Blade Runner. Not that it in any way takes away from the brilliance of Blade Runner as a film, but to imagine they take place in each others world seriously spoils the beautiful atmosphere of Deckard's universe when you start thinking about it. In fact that goes back to one of my earliest posts where I mentioned how I especially don't like Alien and Predator co-existing in the same universe simply for the fact that Predator and especially Predator 2's over-the-top comic-book world just don't blend with the grim coldness of Ridley and Giger's Alien (or nihilistic Alien 3, or even Aliens).

I agree with the optimistic sentiment, just for example, Outland could easily aesthetically exist in the same universe as Alien, with Con-Am being, say, the Microsoft to Weylan(d)-Yutani's Apple - big name competitors in a hostile filthy space-mining future, but since so many films can't live up to the legacy that they might try and attach themselves onto (and that's the real issue here, it gives weak films the chance to associate themselves with classics by loose association to a classic work of cinema that'll likely be used for shameful promotion purposes), I'm happier for sci fi films to remain far apart from one another.

The defense would like to call to the stand: Ian McDiarmid; and enter into discovery, the tons of Star Wars fans who enjoy or love all six films.

So quickly back to the original debate...

Saying it's not an Alien film until it actually premieres is a good move, if you ask me. People won't be able to bitch about how "the aliens are hardly in it". Keep the title free of the word 'Alien' as well.
This does not sound so bad to me either. The only question is whether in the rotten capitalistic society moved only by profit the title "Alien" won't sell well in the end after all. (But I forbid thee to use the fact that I have said it as an argument for implementing it, Scott's title-naming advisor! Thou surely art the most rotten of all!)

***

And just regarding the "alien homeworld" and O'Bannon and co., then I would consider the fact that originally O'Bannon and co. had the egg silo there. Personally, if there was ever anything I have asked from the movie, I wanted to see the very mentioned Egg Silo Itself reimplemented and revisited, so to say. But, and that's the point, that would logically presume a different planet, as I am not aware of any Egg Silo on LV-426. Piste(?)

However, I am tolerant. As long as the threat of the possibility of Angelina Jolie actually starring in the thing does not really come true,* I am open to many things...

*If such a horror came to pass, then I would at least demand that she dies in the most gruesome death of all (shown in full on the screen, head chewed is fine). I hereby apologise to all humane people, I am generally very humane too, but there are just things which my good conscience won't permit to accept without revenge. But this all was supposed to be just a side remark, so please ignore, I suggest...

Well, I guess they'd better make a damned good movie, cut a damned good trailer, and roll out a provocative and widespread ad campaign.

Facehugger in da face... For the last time! I prefer the Alien mythology and mystery to be left untouched. We do not need to know about the Alien homeworld or the origins of the Space Jockey. I love all 4 Alien films as they where about Ripley's story, how she started off as a mining ship pilot, then a kick ass warrior, got preggers with one of the damn things and killed herself with the queen only for that damn new company clone her and leave her half human and half the thing she fought so hard to kill. Thats what I loved about the last two films is how darker her character got. And even though my big guilty pleasure is the 2 AVP movies, we do not need anymore Alien films as it was Ripleys story that just happened to have some lovely, scary and kick ass bugs which we call Aliens. If the film gets made and does have Aliens and is good I will eat my replica facehugger.
