'Commitment to PG-13'

If this goes PG-13 then to hell with it, I'm so so sick of everything being PG-13 so everybody can see it and the studio makes more money, this is why many films are shit these days.

This time I don't mind. It seems more like it will be Lovecraftian dread and exploration of a new world than anything particularly gory. Plus the DVD will be R no matter what.

^Yes I read that the DVD would be R but that's not the point, the original cinematic release should be the final version and R rated, if there's a weaker/softer version then that should be the extra on the DVD....for the kids.

So you need Blood and Gore for a movie to scare people?

Oi! Back off! Different films require different styles of film making, ok. It should be up to the creative team and them alone. I hate this fucking high horse attitude people have when it comes to ratings.

^^No but I do want an adult film for adults, just like the original film, you don't need blood n gore but a small spoonful along with nice hints is good, as in the original film. I don't believe a PG-13 will do this justice, example: 'AvP' failure.

PG-13 is for kids, hence the 13.

Fuck violence, but about realistic dialogue (shit goes down, people start dropping f-bombs. Fact of life.) and that frank, it's-no-big-deal attitude toward sex that is supposed to be a part of human culture according to Ridley?

Terminators kill people. Alcoholic New York cops swear. People bleed when giant penii punch through their ribcage. I'm pro R rating all the way. But if Scott is happy to deliver a PG-13 film, I'm happy to accept.

http://www.albertafilmratings.ca/recentclasstrailers.aspx

Prometheus trailer rated 14a, the other films with 14a trailers are all R rated.

^Aren't those 14 ratings Canadian or something? read that somewhere I'm sure as the rating of this film is a strong topic.

^^The film doesn't have to be violent either but very strong with suggestion, language (not just swearing for the hell of it but simply realistic) and tone. 'Alien' as we know isn't overly violent or gory but its highly suggestive and makes you think its overly violent n gory, the brooding atmosphere, bleakness and stark reality of it all is brutal and clearly not for the young.

If 'Prom' is a PG-13 then I simply cannot see how Scott can convey the same tension and feeling, 'AvP' was PG-13 and boy did it feel like it! even though it still had its moments you can CLEARLY see the difference in tone for the rating.

What I'm scared of is another big sci-fi film that basically will feel more in tone with 'Avatar' or 'The Matrix', remember its due for a big summer release hinting that its for everyone....a summer blockbuster, in my opinion that's not how a film like this should be. I thought Ridley was stronger than that Sad

How not? It's difficult to see how the MPAA could rate something an R according to its suggestiveness. And from what we've seen of it, it's brooding and bleak and probably not conceived for a young audience.  And Charlize Theron is naked. Doing push ups. So we kinda know the audience Scott is making this for.

AVP's problems were little to do with its rating.

^You know what I mean, 'Alien' is more tone and suggestion rather than outright gore and violence, everything is dark and virtually hidden which is more scary or tense...and it is no doubt an 18 or R rating.

'AvP' had many issues but in my opinion the fact it is was watered down SO much and had virtually no proper violence, gore or even suggestion at it made it very weak and not in line with previous offerings. You cannot have a PG-13 Predator or Alien film.

I dunno what everybody here thinks but for me I simply can't see how 'Prom' can be dark, tense, brooding, scary, bleak, nail biting, harrowing etc...when its been created under the guide lines of a PG-13 rating. If 'Prom' is to be in the same vain as 'Alien' then how can it be PG-13 without something being watered down?

Scott conceived of it as being 'R' material.  To keep the studio happy, he's shooting both 'R' and 'PG-13' footage, because the budget's pretty big.  I can't really see how that will affect the overall film in terms of brooding bleakness and suggestion.

I can, however, see how it will affect Charlize Theron's nipples and pubic area. I don't know how gory the film is because so far we've only heard something about ooze attacking people, which sounds pretty horrible but isn't gore.

'Alien' is more tone and suggestion rather than outright gore and violence, everything is dark and virtually hidden which is more scary or tense...and it is no doubt an 18 or R rating.

It's a 15 here now (same as AVP).  You take out the chestburster, and the couple of swear words, and you have something that is, I guess, a 12A here (depending on how much the BBFC condone violence being done to androids!). That's due to everything being dark and virtually hidden, which is kinda handy from a certification point of view.

Yes....I know he's doing both R and PG but personally only an R is required, the thought of big budget films going down this route sounds ridiculous, making both a tame and adult version. If this is the case then I will skip the cinematic version and just wait for the proper adult version on BR, I have no interest in seeing a kids version of the film, PG-13 = kids film in my eyes, doesn't matter how you look at it or twist it, bottom line its a kiddie rating.

Alien 15??

18 rating everywhere Deez, I also disagree that simply taking out some swearing and the chestburster would result in a 12 rated film, the suspense in Alien alone is an 18 rating, what I'm saying is I don't think you will get that same suspense in 'Prom' with a PG-13, how can you when the rating allows youngsters as young as 13 to go, even younger if they have an adult with them.

But an 'R' allows youngsters of any age to go, as long as they've got an adult with them. Cinemas and rating systems in America are vastly different to how they operate in the UK, Hubbs.

Alien 15??

Yep.

But here's the amusing thing - the commentary is rated as 18. So while you could, as a 15 year old, go and see Alien at the cinema since 2003, you can't buy it with the commentary until you're 18.  The power of the spoken word!

I don't know about 'tame,' just less graphic. But it's a commercial decision. If you've got a big budget, you need as many people as you can at the domestic box office in order to make it financially viable. A PG-13, and a 3D version, goes some way to ensuring that. Selling an additional version to the home market is clearly a shrewd move as well.
