So in the US if a film is R rated anyone can see it if they go with an adult!? what's the point of the rating then This is rather my point about PG-13 not denoting 'lack of adult content' but rather 'lack of graphic content'!

The point of the rating system is to placate the hand-wringing moralists and helicopter moms whose favorite phrase is "think of the children!"
Oh, it also gives responsible parents an idea of what a film contains, so they don't do something stupid like take a 7-year-old to see something extremely violent with lots of disturbing imagery. Not that it stops some people.

Can this wait? I need to do some calibrations

You would think common sense would be all people need when taking kids to seeing movies...

I'm still not convinced seeing as AvP was PG-13 and that was pretty meak if you ask me, not totally childish of course but hardly up to the standards expected.

You would think common sense would be all people need when taking kids to seeing movies... Depends on how much information they have. Some people took their kids to see "Bad Santa," thinking that any movie about Santa must be appropriate for kids. If they'd read the reviews, they would have known better, but not everyone does that. I've also heard stories about dumbasses renting hentai for their kids at video stores, thinking "it's a cartoon, how bad can it be?" Which is a perfectly reasonable assumption to make if you've never been exposed to any animation besides Saturday morning cartoons.

I would think common sense would entail reading up on a movie before taking your child to see it.
But I can see your point with the Hentai.

This is rather my point about PG-13 not denoting 'lack of adult content' but rather 'lack of graphic content'!
This happened with 'Don't Be Afraid of the Dark', it wasn't a particularly bloody film, in fact Captain America this year had blood squibs and a man getting chopped up by a plane propeller in a far more graphic fashion than what had happened in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Yet Captain America got PG-13 for it's light hearted adventurous tone and Dark got an R got the constant terror the characters where suffering despite anything violent being cut aways and being left to the imagination. Ridley's PG-13 and R rated cuts may be two entirely different films!
