This news this morning hit me like a charging rhino in the gut! It may be selfishness but the news ruined my day, I feel so sorry for his family and close friends (the latter of which he had many)!
I don't think he was a cunt in any way, there's pussyfooting around idiots, telling them they're doing a good job while they fuck up all over the place, and then there's flat-out telling them the facts of their ignorance without fear or self-censorship. Hitch was firmly in the latter. I wish I had his courage to call a spade a spade sometimes! His arguments were bulletproof, which is why the religiots sought to demonise and discredit him - they couldn't destroy his arguments, so they decided to destroy the source of the arguments. Such is the intellectual integrity of the supernaturalist atavisms. If he was ever wrong, he would admit it as soon as he'd become aware of his mistake, a true rationalist. The human species has suffered a great loss! I only started to read his work over the last three years, and only just got round to reading
God Is Not Great (everyone here should make a point to read this book, regardless of beliefs, or lack thereof), I had only finished it the night before last! It's not like I didn't see it coming, but knowing that he would die didn't make reading that news any easier. He wasn't perfect, being an alcoholic and a chain-smoker, but this didn't seem to dull his wit, charm and intellect. To the end, he remained a dedicated seeker of Truth, and an advocate of Science and reason.
I'll hold the memory of Hitchens owning Tony Blair in debate on religion, that was Hitch at his best. Farewell to a friend not met!
