Now we know Prometheus is beckoned into space by the 'Jockies' so they can be woken up and then fly to Earth to invade it - only to be stopped by Kamikaze Prometheus.
Haven't seen it yet but, Christ, really? That's awfully Earth Hive...

One thing I like is the ancient civilizations being connected thing. Kind of taking a MASSIVE shit on Anderson's AvP.

That's awfully Earth Hive...
Sort of. One thing I like is the ancient civilizations being connected thing. Kind of taking a MASSIVE shit on Anderson's AvP.
That's what I thought as well. My first reaction was like "oh no, not again this 'we found the same pictogram at all civilizations!' shit!" To be honest, they really could have kept the Anderson scheme if they want to do the same thing (not that I would want them to, though). Still, it's a lot better to have ancient civilizations controlled by Jockeys (or whatever) than Predators. What was this old (?) Aliens comic series? Destroying Angels something? Never read that, but got the impression that it operated somewhat with this basic idea? But this is officially sanctioned stuff, which was suitably mysterious when the teaser came out. Now we know Prometheus is beckoned into space by the 'Jockies' so they can be woken up and then fly to Earth to invade it - only to be stopped by Kamikaze Prometheus.
Of course there seems to be more shit going on with slimy stuff, but it gave more stuff away than I would've liked. We now know what she's 'sorry' and 'wrong' about.
Yes, I wonder what made them reveal so much in the trailer. Because this opens a completely different can of... slime... I mean, from what's been revealed this far, this gives away completely different things. Unnecessary, says I. Did they think the audience needed to know more to decide to come to the theater, or what? That the masses wouldn't want to go to see a movie where they'd have no idea what it is about? Personally, I sort of hope that the fact that the trailer was revealing so much is due to there being still much much more hidden and that some of the "main plot" is elsewhere still... or so I would really like to believe. Btw what do you think about the comment below the video (made by the authors)? "In the distant future, two superpowers control Earth and fight each other for all the solar system's natural resources. When one side dispatches a team to a distant planet to terraform it for human colonization, the team discovers an indigenous race of bio-mechanoid killers.
Ridley Scott, director of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner,' returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race."Now if THAT does not give too much away, I am going to eat my hat. And what "two superpowers"? I thought the US vs. USSR basic plot was dropped during 90's, so are those two Earth-based superpowers (one of them, obviously, still being US, and the other one what, China?) or, say, Earth vs. Some Random Colonies? I would think or hope that's just random background, but putting it in the first line of the movie's description makes it sound quite different from what I had been expecting (as if it was one of "the" important things). The line about "indigenous bio-mechanoid killers" is worse, though, I just hope the whole thing is babbling of uninformed propagation manager...

Weyland and Yutani?
Aaah, well. Never thought about it that way. When one says "superpower", I think (even though that's obviously rather limited) still in "country"-terms. But more like, I never imagined Weyland (/Yutani) to be *that* big of a thing to be called "one of the two superpowers". My impression of it was always more like (armed) McDonalds. It's everywhere, it's rich, powerful, you can hardly imagine it disappearing overnight, it can have its hands in lots of stuff, but it is not the "face" of the ruling force, even less one of two. One of eight, I always thought, or somesuch. But yea, if it is so, then it comes down to what I said about bad phrasing...

Going by the Weyland timeline and subsidiary info on the site, I'm surprised there's even room for another major company in the same area! They own FTL and hypersleep and terraforming. Looks like they're putting down colonies themselves - the US military comes to them for advice about colonial defence!

Then again, the timeline does say that in 2038 Weyland 'becomes chief employer of Asian Conflict veterans supplying 35% with steady work.' So there seems to have been a biggish war in Asia. Myabe it is a US/China thing...

Really enjoyed watching all the new videos - the teaser, the robot viral video and the long 2.30min trailer. I'm not going to over-analyse them though, or rewatch them. I don't want things spoilt for me too much and just enjoyed it washing over me. I'm probably on the wrong forum to want to avoid spoilers though (especially since I might have watched said-spoilers but didn't mentally process it all) haha. So I just kind of glance through all your replies hoping not to read anything I didn't notice already. I've still not clicked on that photos-of-space-jockeys thread. My impression of it was always more like (armed) McDonalds.
But I'll contribute this much, not that it has much bearing on anything, just as we discussed in a similar thread, I believe Virgin is the closest present-day comparison to Weyland Corp. They cover everything from drinks to mobile phone service to megastores to a record label to video-games to ocean exploration to... Virgin Galactic http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_GalacticIt's not hard to imagine a company like that could keep growing and growing in the future as Weyland Corp fictionally does until more sinister interests such as weapons development etc. become involved.

One thing I like is the ancient civilizations being connected thing. Kind of taking a MASSIVE shit on Anderson's AvP. Dunno about that. Connected ancient civilisations was one of the main points of AvP. It does however seem to have taken a massive shit on Dark Horse's take on the Jockies (aka Malakak).

I'm pretty psyched! I don't think the Jockies lured the prometheus crew to their world/base/whatever. I think that they misinterpreted the pictograms - it was a warning, pointing out a cluster of stars, and telling anyone intelligent enough to keep the fuck away. Sort of like the 'Forbidden Zone' in Planet of the Apes, the place is off-limits. We go blundering in, and the SJs don't take too kindly to the intrusion by their upstart creations. The big blue bald guy is definitely the fella in the pilot's chair. If you look carefully at the chest of the SJ as the chair envelopes him, it is identical to the chest of the big guy, with the ribs and biomechanical detail. He actually seems very sinister and creepy, I think I'm warming to him being the unsuited SJ. Although I'll allow for the possibility that he is actually the mutated David or Holloway.
