Project Prometheus Passwords Cracked
« on: March 22, 2012, 05:40:40 AM »

The very clever guys at the Unfiction Forums have cracked the passwords for the Project Prometheus site, leading to a couple of hi-res photos of Prometheus.

The first one to be cracked was:

Link: http://www.projectprometheus.com/eridu/
Password: tell abu shahrain

(Tell Abu Shahrain in Iraq is the current location of Eridu).

This leads to a screenshot of the Prometheus:

The second one cracked was:

Link: http://www.projectprometheus.com/245409/
Password: DDM2DDM2DDM2AMAMAMBIGBIGBIGBMESMPP,

This leads to a screenshot of the Prometheus landed and unloading on an alien planet:

More info at the Unfiction forum thread here.

Note how the mound in the second photo resembles Giger's art for the Harkonen palace in the aborted Dune project!

Now that's out of the way, the passwords:

SERIOUSLY?

FFS, two password pages which, other than their URLs, look absolutely identical but have different passwords? Any idea how much confusion that causes if you're trying to crack them?

Case sensitivity? Yeah, that matters if you're worried about security. If you're running something viral, you actually want people to crack them. It's probably a bad idea to then convert a place name into lower case and then include spaces as well.  Spaces in passwords!

And that second password - wow! The inclusion of a comma, a typo from the wiki page on the Cosmic Call active SETI message structure, totally amazing. It's almost like they didn't want people to crack it.

And to be honest, the company doing the viral content actually had to lead people by the nose through twitter in order to have someone crack it. "Try it without the arrows. Didn't work? Use upper case. Didn't work? Oh, use the comma at the end!"

Doesn't bode well for any of the info contained on the Weyland Industries site.

I think that's where the derelict is housed. Here's a closer look from one of the trailers:

I have more screencaps if anybody is interested.

It also reminds me of the egg silo a bit by its look. Which is perfect by me. My "revival-of-old-architectonic-ideas"-pursuing self is satisfied Smiley
